Zoning board closes Melrose porch hearing, delays Beck Road vote

Arlington's Zoning Board of Appeals closed a porch permit hearing and continued a novel firearms-disposal office case to September 8. The board voted 4-0 to close the hearing on a special permit for Catherine and James Fleming's 15 Melrose Street porch project, adopting a position that screened porches count as usable open space, with Member Adam LeBlanc arguing "to me that still is open." Separately, the board continued a hearing on converting a storage facility at 15 Beck Road into an appointment-only office to process firearm surrenders and sales, after resident Steve Moore warned the setup risked "laundering firearms through this facility" and Member Roger DuPont raised concerns about weapons left in client vehicles on the street. Chair Christian Klein presided over a four-member quorum; Co-Chair Patrick Hanlon and Associate Member Nick Rosenberg were absent.
