Newton council panel backs $2.9 million purchase for police station flexibility. The Services Committee voted 6-0 to recommend authorizing the city to spend roughly $2.9 million to reacquire 492 Waltham Street, the former Family Access property, which city official Morris said would give the city "flexibility as we embark upon our police headquarters project." Council President John Oliver confirmed the purchase would likely be financed through bonds, while officials said the city's existing debt service already runs "a little north of $30 million a year." The panel also voted 6-0 to bar the Newton South Little League's fenced field at Newton Highlands Playground from ever being designated an off-leash dog park, after league president Kyle Nicholas said the change would give volunteers "a little bit of extra ammunition" in disputes with dog owners. A third item, a resolution backing state Medicare for All legislation, was shelved 6-0 after the underlying bill was redrafted in the Legislature.
