Newton council panel recommends five board and commission appointments

Newton council committee advances five board appointments on unanimous votes. The Programs and Services Committee, chaired by Josh Krinsman, recommended Paul Levy to the Newton Commonwealth Foundation 5-0 after Councilor Brittany Hume-Charman questioned him on golf-course water rates, which Levy, a former Massachusetts Water Resources Authority administrator, called an area where "there's an obligation on the part of the golf course" to conserve. The committee also advanced Linda Brenner and Dr.
Mark Grossman to the Health and Human Services Advisory Council, with Brenner telling the panel, "we have to start at home" on LGBTQ health access, and Grossman citing his emergency-medicine and disaster-response background, including work after the 2018 Parkland shooting. Reappointments for Dr. Carolyn Bernstein and Janet Hutig passed without discussion.
Chair Krinsman said the committee's September 23 meeting will take up a leaf-blower ordinance and open discussion of charter reform.
