Newton parking panel splits 3-1 to hand street exemptions to Traffic Council. The Public Safety and Transportation Committee, chaired by Councillor Tariq Lucas, advanced a plan letting Newton's Traffic Council grant street-by-street exceptions to the winter overnight parking ban, while rejecting a citywide neighborhood-exemption ordinance and codifying the disability parking waiver, both 0-6. Councillor Sean Roche pushed a street-width formula tied to the ban's 77-vote referendum margin; Vice Chair Rainey Block pointed to assessor data showing 1,766 parcels citywide lack off-street parking.
Councillor Pam Wright said the ban keeps Newton "car-light"; Councillor Susan Albright countered, "But if you need to rent an apartment, you can't have a car?" Councillor Andrea Kelly called enforcement fears "fear mongering." A public comment session is set for September 9, with a possible vote October 7.
