Reading Board of Health seeks full kratom ban
Board of Health · Meeting of October 8, 2026
Reading's Board of Health moved toward a full ban on kratom sales and tighter tobacco penalties. Director Adetokunbo Solarin was directed to draft a kratom prohibition for November after consultant Erica cited 93 Massachusetts deaths tied to kratom in four years and more than 2,300 national poison-control calls; member Kevin Sexton said he backed a ban but wouldn't "pass it" just because other towns had. The board also voted 5-0 to transfer a tobacco license to Rushank Patel for a store at 178 Main Street and debated making tobacco suspensions mandatory, with Joan Wetzel arguing "a violation's a violation." A state budget line item for local public health funding landed at $13 million for FY27, down from an $18 million request.
