Medford Board of Health lets two stores split up tobacco suspensions while it weighs a rule change. McSheffrey's Mobile and NK Convenience each face a $2,000 fine and seven-day suspension after second-offense sales of tobacco to a minor, part of nine violations found among the town's 51 licensed outlets this year. Employee Joe DeFranco said "there's a reasonable amount of doubt in my mind that the conversation went like that," while NK Convenience representative Love Patel called the violation "discouraging." The board voted 3-0 to let both businesses serve their suspensions on non-consecutive days rather than in one block, and will consider changing its regulation from mandatory "shall" to discretionary "may" at a future meeting.
Separately, Tufts University and BioLabs presented a Biosafety Level 2 permit application for a roughly 12,500-square-foot research hub planned for 200 Boston Ave., targeting occupancy in about six weeks pending its MWRA permit and a still-missing pest-control contract.
