Burlington Committee Reviews Champlain Parkway Monitoring, GMT Funding, and Unaccepted Streets
Other Committee · Meeting of May 26, 2026
Burlington's transportation committee heard updates on Champlain Parkway monitoring, GMT funding, and a citywide unaccepted streets review at its May 26 meeting. Gordon Mims, senior project coordinator for the Champlain Parkway, told the committee the roadway will open June 29 and be monitored for two years using Mile Vision cameras and Burlington Police incident reports, with a maintenance agreement with Vermont and South Burlington heading to City Council on June 15. GMT representative Clay Clark flagged a roughly $3 million funding gap and said a potential 66 percent increase in STIC factor awards could bring $1.5 million in additional federal aid, contingent on matching state and local funds.
GMT Planning Director Chris Damani announced Routes 1 and 11 will shift to bidirectional travel on all of Main Street on June 29, adding two stops and removing the South Manusky Avenue and Bank Street stop. On unaccepted streets, Phil Peterson and Calvin Wittrich of the Department of Public Works described a phased assessment framework covering roughly 89 streets, with a final phased list promised to the committee no later than August and street-by-street acceptance decisions reserved for the City Council. Chittenden Drive resident Eric Simone, speaking in public forum, said the city has effectively "kicked the proverbial can down the road for nearly 60 years" while residents paid taxes on streets the city maintained but never formally accepted.
