Westford Preservation Panel Votes to Oppose Tax Surcharge Cut

Westford's Community Preservation Committee votes unanimously to oppose a surcharge rollback headed to town meeting. Chairman Bob Jeffries said cutting the CPA surcharge from 3 percent to 2 percent would cost the town about $1.2 million a year and forfeit roughly $56,000 annually in premium state matching funds, totaling near $750,000 over 15 years of existing debt. Town Accountant Jesse Beyer told the reorganized committee it awarded just over $3.5 million across its busiest grant cycle ever last year and enters fiscal 2027 with about $2.6 million available for new applications.
Resident Diane Wood urged the panel to "have some concise summary with figures" for Special Town Meeting on October 26. The committee also reelected Bob Jeffries chairman, elected Jamie vice chair, approved $7,900 in state coalition dues, and thanked outgoing member Marilyn Frank for more than 25 years of service.
