Belmont Select Board Names Topio Interim Fire Chief

Belmont names Andrew Topio interim fire chief, sells $6.94 million in bonds. The Select Board, chaired by Taylor Yates with Vice Chair Carol Berberian and member Matt Taylor, unanimously appointed Topio after a firefighter-packed ceremony, with Topio calling it "honored and humbled." Treasurer Leslie Davidson reported the town's $6,940,242 bond anticipation notes sold to TD Financial at 2.7481 percent, aided by the town's AAA Moody's rating. The board accepted $15,000 for the Belmont Teen Committee and $5,000 for the Recreation summer movie series from Belmont Youth Activities and D.A.R.E.
Inc., approved a revised health insurance opt-out policy set at 20 percent of plan cost, and set September 28 to both open and close the warrant for a November 16 special town meeting. New Sports Field Manager Eric Joyce reported dramatic turf improvements but flagged persistent dog damage; Taylor said "this is something we need to resolve before the spring."
