Zoning Board Denies Myrtle Avenue Third Unit
Zoning Board · Meeting of September 24, 2026
Cambridge zoning board splits 2-2, denies Myrtle Avenue addition after attorney clash. Board member Wendy Leiserson recused herself from the 1 Myrtle Avenue vote after attorney Patrick W. Barrett III accused the board of "insulting" conduct toward his clients, owners Fan Wang and Mark Wagner; the special permit for a fourth-floor, third-unit addition then failed 2-2.
Neighbor Tia Chapman said the compliant "wedding cake" design "lets in the sun" and opposed the taller alternative. Separately, the board continued a Harvard Square variance for 127 Mount Auburn Street and 17 Story Street to October 15, sending a dispute over whether the mixed hotel-condominium building is capped at 60, 80 or 85 feet to the city solicitor. Five Hilliard Street abutters backed the project for increasing their rear setback to nearly 14 feet from 5 feet.
The board also unanimously approved variances and permits for projects at Granite Street, 86 Sciarappa Street and 200 Auburn Street.
