Townsend Board of Health OKs two septic permits
Board of Health · Meeting of September 22, 2026
Townsend recycling contamination hits 15.8%, more than double a neighboring town's rate. Hauler G.W. Shaw & Son told the Board of Health an outside audit by Casella found the contamination level well above the 6 to 10 percent range haulers consider acceptable, compared with 6.5 percent in Lunenburg.
"It's a starting point. We're all learning," Shaw said. Health Administrator Carla Walter is updating the purple pay-as-you-throw bag flyer to clarify refund rules, and the board floated adding a QR code and an educational video.
Separately, the board voted 3-0 twice to approve septic permits for 27 Proctor Road and a new-construction lot on Haynes Road, approved $21,099.95 in invoices including $17,553.71 to Nashoba Associated Boards of Health, and confirmed Town Hall will close Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays to cut utility costs.
