Sudbury schools' new Budget Subcommittee sets reporting rules at first meeting

Sudbury's new SPS Budget Subcommittee sets monthly reporting, RFP tracking and a written warrant process. At its first meeting January 29, members Betsy Suess and Jessica McCready elected Suess chair 2-0 and mapped out a standard reporting package: monthly percent-of-budget spend and staffing reconciliation, quarterly budget-to-actual, transfers, revolving accounts, special education costs and prepaid expense roll-forwards, and an annual five-year forecast. Staff warned that rebidding the joint Sudbury/Lincoln-Sudbury bus contract now would run about 10 percent higher, versus 3 percent base and 5 percent option-year increases in the current deal, and recommended waiting until fall to go out.

Members also nailed down that School Committee warrant articles will be submitted by the committee itself with the chair as designee, saying "all warrant articles to do with the school need to come through the school committee." Salaries account for 82 percent of the SPS budget.
