Somerville Licensing Commission Votes to Allow 3 A.M. Alcohol Service Through July 31

Somerville voted to allow bars to serve until 3 a.m. through July 31 and opted out of public alcohol consumption zones at its June 16 Licensing Commission meeting. Chair and Commissioner Joe Lynch led the three-member commission in a pair of unanimous votes tied to state legislation enabling extended World Cup hours: first establishing a baseline temporary extension to 2 a.m. for all licensees through July 31, 2026, then authorizing an opt-in permit process allowing qualifying establishments to serve until 3 a.m. with a 3:30 a.m. closing, at no application fee. Somerville Police Department Captain Diogo de Oliveira said on the record that his department had "concerns over extending this till 3 a.m.," citing risks of binge drinking, fights, and traffic incidents, and the Somerville Fire Department echoed those concerns; Lynch noted that only 15 of the city's roughly 200 licensed establishments had applied as of the meeting date.

The commission also unanimously approved a new all-forms restaurant license for Parlor Bird Inc. at 151 Cedar Street, a Victorian-parlor-style cafe concept with 49 seats on the Somerville Community Path, over objections from neighbors on Alpine Street who raised concerns about noise, parking, and rodents. Gaucho Brazilian Cuisine at 102 Broadway had its 2 a.m. license restored after the commission found it had installed acoustic panels, new windows, and additional security following noise violations earlier this year.
