Somerville Body Review Panel Agrees to Biweekly Pace to Meet December Deadline

Other Committee · Meeting of May 27, 2026

Somerville's Review of Multiple Member Bodies Committee agreed to meet biweekly and heard staff presentations on the city's four planning and zoning bodies at its May 27 remote session. Chair Chris Dwan warned that six remaining monthly meetings would be insufficient to review all 40-plus boards and deliver a required report to the City Council by December 2026, and all four members present — Dwan, Councillor Jesse Klingen, Community Partnerships Liaison Brenna Broderick, and Derek Rice — consented to the accelerated schedule. Project Assistant Emily presented a qualitative coding methodology and preliminary findings on the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Urban Design Commission, and Historic Preservation Commission, all within the city's Planning, Preservation, and Zoning division.

Rice flagged that chairs and vice chairs on the Planning Board and ZBA are serving on expired terms with no apparent legal authority for holdovers, saying he "do[es] not like being pointed at as the reason that my neighbor's committees are not being filled" after neighbors told him the mayor's office had cited the committee's work as grounds for pausing broad appointments. Broderick said emergency appointments have continued for bodies unable to make quorum, and no bodies should be unable to conduct business because of this committee's work.
