Medford Conservation Commission approves shell lighting, trail drainage projects

Medford Conservation Commission unanimously clears riverfront lighting and Fells trail drainage repairs. The board voted 4-0 to issue a negative determination for a city-led overhaul of stage and pathway lighting at the Condon Shell, where engineer Kayla described new dark-sky-compliant, 3,000 Kelvin pedestrian fixtures and pole-mounted stage lights "aimed at the shell" to stop glare in performers' faces. Commissioners then voted 4-0 for a state Department of Conservation and Recreation drainage fix on the Mustang Loop Trail, where erosion has been clogging catch basins at the Medford High School lot; DCR's Ali said crews will "add a little hump" to redirect runoff and will leave erosion controls in place for one growing season.
Both projects proceed without a full Notice of Intent. Commissioners separately noted the adjacent Medford High School renovation project now carries an estimated cost of $819 million to $1 billion.
