Littleton CPC approves $118,000 for 2027 lake weed treatment

Littleton's Community Preservation Committee committed $118,000 to fight invasive weeds in two lakes and cleared a Masonic lodge's window repair for funding eligibility. The panel voted 9-0 to send $48,000 to Long Lake and $70,000 to Forge Pond for spring 2027 herbicide treatment, both drawn from its undesignated fund rather than open space, after members argued the open space account, at roughly $915,000, remains underfunded against a $2 million goal. Conservation staff said the town's water department stopped covering lake treatment costs years ago, leaving CPC as a "bridge" until a permanent capital line item exists; Conservation Agent Tim Pearson has proposed one for fiscal 2028.
Separately, the committee unanimously found a Masonic lodge's roughly $20,000 stained-glass window restoration at 310 King Street eligible for historic-preservation funding, contingent on removing a Masonic symbol added to the 1916 windows. Members also flagged an unresolved problem: two baseball fields and a softball field are expected to go offline at Shaker Lane School by July 1, 2027, with no town funding yet approved for replacements.
