SHERBORN — Dover School Committee votes unanimously to opt out of Massachusetts school choice and sets up a class-size policy review. The committee's 5-0 vote Tuesday continues a longstanding practice of declining outside students, citing a gap between the roughly $20,000-to-$25,000 per-pupil cost in Dover and the state's approximately $5,000 school choice reimbursement. In a separate discussion, administrators confirmed that the district's extra classroom section, originally assigned to second grade, will shift to fourth grade for 2026-2027, leaving rising third graders in three sections averaging 21.7 students each — near the top of the district's 17-to-22 policy range.

Committee member Kevin Belke and others called for a formal study of class-size guidelines alongside a review of projected enrollment declines from roughly 470 students toward 400 over the next five years, with a proposal requested for the June 2 meeting. The committee also heard a first read of a revised district handbook, code of conduct, and restraint policy, and received an update on a two-program elementary ELA pilot — using McGraw-Hill's Emerge and the open-source Fishtank — launching districtwide in fall 2026.
