Concord HDC Approves Library Statue, Camera Plan, and Fencing in Single Session

CARLISLE — Concord Historic Districts Commission clears Margaret Fuller statue, Town Hall cameras, and fencing changes in unanimous votes. The commission voted 5-0 on each of five substantive items at its May 6 meeting, approving a bronze statue of journalist and women's rights advocate Margaret Fuller for the Concord Free Public Library's Sudbury Road reading garden, with a public dedication scheduled for May 23 at 2 p.m. Library Corporation trustee Jeff Adams described Fuller as "the best read person in New England" by her thirties and noted the sculpture, originally by Penelope Jenks, is being restored by sculptor Robert Schur.

The commission also approved a redesigned security camera plan for Town Hall at 22 Monument Square — conduit moved entirely inside the building, cameras painted flat brown — with a condition requiring staff sign-off on the final paint color. Revised fencing and landscaping at 50 Monument Street, the Burns House, cleared after a morning site visit led to elimination of a street-level cobblestone apron, a retaining wall, and a fence height reduction to four and a half feet, with rhododendron plantings added for screening.
