Tyngsborough fire station committee zeroes in on a sub-$20 million redesign after June's ballot defeat. A survey of 247 residents found nearly 85 percent believe the town needs a new station, but cost and tax impact drove the "no" votes, with 80 percent saying they'd back a cheaper version. The committee, which lacks a quorum and took no votes, has sorted possible cuts into three tiers and is awaiting cost validation from design firm H2M before an August 20 review; a revised scope is expected by mid-September.

"It's unrealistic in this day and age to think that it's going to be much below $20 million," one committee member said, adding the panel has already spent $300,000 on the process. Elsewhere, the Select Board voted 4-0-0 to transfer a liquor license to Wedgwood Weddings at the former Chateau Merrimack site, extended its outsourced town accountant contract through November 1, and heard member Nathaniel Marino propose requiring special-permit review for battery storage facilities after the Middlesex Road project drew criticism for needing no local approval.
