Sudbury Conservation Commission rules out arsenic preservative for Sherman's Bridge project

SUDBURY — June 1, 2026 — Sudbury Conservation Commission unanimously rejects CCA preservative for Sherman's Bridge rehabilitation. The 5-0 vote on June 1 bars chromated copper arsenate from the wood treatment options for the joint Sudbury-Wayland glulam deck replacement project, MassDEP file 301-1467, mirroring a unanimous Wayland vote the week before. Engineer Mike Riccardi of consultant TEC presented three remaining options for the engineered-wood panels — DCOI, copper naphthenate and a fourth product, micronized copper azole, for the handrails and walkways. "CCA has been around for a long time and there's a reason it's more or less been phased out of what you can buy at a store," said Member Mark Sevier, who moved the dismissal. DPW Director Tina Rivard said existing stringers are "working like string cheese." The hearing continues June 15. The commission also closed out a five-year review by issuing an order of conditions for the six-lot Bonnie Brook subdivision at 74-80 Maynard Road.
