Somerville Climate Commission Raises Alarm Over Sewer Plan Costs, Hears Youth Grant News

Somerville's Interim Climate Action Commission flagged deep concerns Thursday about the cost burden of the city's draft combined sewer overflow plan while also receiving updates on a city government reorganization and a new $50,000 youth climate grant. Chair Larry Yu said the gap between the plan's 2050 typical-year storm standard and the more protective 25-year storm standard amounts to roughly $500 to $700 per water meter annually for Somerville households, compared to about $40 per year for most other Metropolitan Water Resources Authority communities. "We get one bite at this apple," Yu said, "and we're paying a lot for something that's not going to be enough." Director of the Office of Sustainability and Environment Steven Nutter briefed commissioners on an FY27 reorganization placing his office, now the Sustainability and Environment Division, within the Strategy and Development Department under the new cabinet structure enabled by the city's recently approved charter.

Climate Change Program Manager Emily Sullivan reported that the city's seventh Climate Ambassadors cohort drew 23 participants with zero attrition and a record 85-plus attendees at its June 12 celebration, bringing the program's total alumni to 175; she also announced that Somerville, one of three Massachusetts cities selected, received a $50,000 Bloomberg Philanthropies grant to issue $1,000-to-$5,000 micro-grants to youth ages 15 to 24 for local climate action projects, with applications opening in September.
