Littleton Board of Health approves septic variance in 3-2 vote

Littleton Board of Health splits 3-2 on a septic variance, then gets warned it could lose its elected status. Chair Kevin Baker, Vice Chair Daniel Kane and Clerk Elizabeth Donegan approved a Regulation No. 27 fill-setback variance for a 20 Orchid Drive septic upgrade over the objections of members Matt Wayson and Kevin Davis, who argued the project should be treated as new construction. Michael Hugo of the Massachusetts Association of Health Boards then told the board a town charter committee draft would convert it from an elected to an appointed body, warning "you need to fight that with all your energy." Hugo also urged the board to assert authority over a proposed gasification facility on the Littleton-Westford line and the existing 550 King Street data center, after members said town counsel had previously told them they had "no seat at the table." The board, run by a single health director assisted by one nurse, also logged West Nile virus risk rising from low to moderate in Middlesex County.
