NEWTON — A newly built affordable-apartment complex opened its resident lottery this week, a private school announced a major gift for a new dining center, and the century-old Nonantum summer festival prepared to kick off — the week's most notable Newton stories, according to Patch reporting.

The Newton Free Library has a full slate of programs over the next several days. On July 17, offerings include a Winnie-the-Pooh Escape Room for kids (9 a.m.-5 p.m.), Tech Time drop-in sessions for adults (10 a.m.-noon and 2-4 p.m.), and Maker Morning Storytime (10:30-11:15 a.m.). On July 18, the library hosts the escape room again, Family Bingo (10:30-11:15 a.m.), Crochet for Our Community for tweens (1-2:30 p.m.), Board Game Club for adults (1-4:30 p.m.), and Sing & Play with Newton Folk Music (2:30-4:30 p.m.). The library will be closed July 19 for its summer Sunday closure. The library's 2026 Summer Reading Program continues for kids, tweens, teens and adults through September 4, and the building remains closed Sundays in July and August under its summer hours.
