Finance Committee votes down senior tax exemption

Groton Finance Committee votes 0-6 against a senior property tax break, fearing it sets up a future override. Chair David Manugian and members Scott Whitefield, Nancy Muller, Bud R. Robertson, Gary Green and Kristina Lengyel rejected the means-tested exemption, which would have cost the town $250,000 to $550,000 a year depending on participation among an estimated 183 eligible seniors.
Whitefield warned the plan "pits the seniors against the families with kids," while Muller said it would "shift an unfair burden onto younger ages and young families." The same meeting, the panel unanimously backed a $3.9 million Cow Pond Brook Field Improvements project for town meeting, trimmed by roughly $900,000 through material substitutions, and approved a $7,500 emergency reserve fund transfer for a structural engineer to inspect deteriorating barns at Hazel Grove before winter.
