Boys Soccer Rallies Past Reading Memorial 4-3 To Stay Unbeaten
WAYLAND — Wayland High School's boys soccer team survived a back-and-forth battle with Reading Memorial High School on Saturday, winning 4-3 to cap a 3-0 week and push its unbeaten start to five games, while the football team beat Ashland High School 35-14 on the road Friday to improve to 2-0 on the season.
TOWN
The Recreation Commission's annual report, presented at its September 15 meeting, credited the Department of Public Works with the best field conditions at Cochituate Park in recent memory. Commissioners read aloud a note from the Eastern Mass Senior Softball League praising the baseball field's condition and said complaints about field quality have dropped sharply in recent years, even as residents still ask for more fields overall.
The Alpine Fields renovation, once expected to reopen this fall, will instead stay closed until spring 2027; DPW officials said the new turf needs another season to establish itself, a decision made harder by ongoing drought conditions that have limited watering. The town's $100,000 annual capital allocation for field upgrades went this year toward Alpine, the high school's varsity baseball field and irrigation work at Claypit Hill, with a fresh $100,000 available again next fiscal year.
HIGH SCHOOL
Boys soccer remains the hottest team in town. The Warriors beat Sutton High School 4-0 on Monday, blanked Weston High School 2-0 on Wednesday, then outlasted Reading Memorial 4-3 on Saturday at Stadium Field. The three wins extend Wayland's unbeaten start to five games, building on last week's 6-1 wins over Natick and Dedham.
Girls soccer had a strong week of its own, beating Nipmuc Regional High School 5-1 on Monday and Maynard High School 2-0 on Saturday, with a scoreless tie at Weston sandwiched in between. The varsity has not lost across its last three games.
Football stayed unbeaten as well, beating Ashland 35-14 on the road Friday night to follow up last week's 35-0 rout of Hopkinton High School. The junior varsity and freshman squads both hosted Ashland during the week, though results from those games were not available by Sunday.
Volleyball split the difference. The varsity beat Bedford High School 3-0 in sets on Monday and rallied to beat Concord-Carlisle High School 3-1 on Friday, but was swept 3-0 at Weston in between. The freshman squad went 2-0 on the week, beating Bedford and Concord-Carlisle.
Field hockey continued to struggle, tying Weston 3-3 on Tuesday before falling to Bedford 3-1 on Thursday and Malden Catholic High School 4-1 on Friday at Stadium Field. The Warriors are still searching for their first win of the fall. Boys golf lost twice more, falling 276-240 to Concord-Carlisle and 241-229 to Newton South High School, extending its season-opening skid.
YOUTH
Wayland Little League has closed registration for its fall baseball and softball programs; the league is directing remaining questions to registrar@waylandlittleleague.org.
Wayland Youth Soccer's K-8 fall season, which opened September 12, played through its second weekend. The league reported all fields open Sunday morning, with afternoon games contingent on rain in the forecast.
