Belmont High School's girls rugby team was celebrated by the Select Board for winning its eighth consecutive national championship, as fall sports tryouts got underway this week.

BELMONT --

HIGH SCHOOL -- Fall sports tryouts began this week at Belmont High School, according to a town-produced conversation featuring Select Board member Carol Berberian that was posted Aug. 26. In it, officials said Athletic Director Adam told the board that Belmont fields more teams than any other school in the Middlesex League. The conversation also noted that Belmont's girls rugby team recently appeared before the Select Board to mark its eighth consecutive national championship, with participants noting the roster turns over each year even as the program keeps winning. The school's hockey team is entering its second season playing home games at the town's rink, officials said, after the facility opened in time for a partial schedule last year.

TOWN -- Officials in the same conversation described the town's new rink as still working through "a couple of hiccups" since opening but said things are "picking up speed" ahead of the new season. The town pool was also described as busy heading into the end of summer.
