Ayer Rate Review Committee opens 2027 solid waste rate review, projects thin $2,611 surplus. The committee first corrected prior minutes, confirming Kurt Roszkowski, not Kimberly Abraham, seconded an earlier motion. Staff member Dan told members the town needs $291,628 in FY27 revenue from stickers and bags, against a $573,013 FY26 budget and $138,773 in retained earnings.
Current rates run $110 for a regular sticker, $60 for seniors, and $40 for a second sticker, with bags at $4 to $6; a typical household pays about $370 a year at the transfer station versus $636 to $696 for private hauling, which Dan called "still a value." The committee declined to revisit bag tags, dropped in 2010 over enforcement and fraud concerns, and will review specific 2027 rate scenarios, including a possible senior sticker increase, at its October 13 meeting.
