Wayland Opens Cooling Stations, Moves Concert Indoors Amid Extreme Heat

An Extreme Heat Watch running through Friday has prompted Wayland to open public cooling locations and move this week's Summer Concert Series indoors, with temperatures forecast to approach 100 degrees and heat-index values potentially topping 110 degrees.

With the greater Boston area bracing for what could be record-breaking heat, the town announced Tuesday that the Wayland Public Library at 5 Concord Road and the Wayland Public Safety Building are both open as cooling stations for residents who need relief.
Thursday's Summer Concert, normally held outdoors, has been relocated indoors to protect attendees from the heat. The Council on Aging, which hosts the summer Thursday concert series, posted the change to its page; residents should check with the COA directly for the updated venue.
Also effective Tuesday at midnight, the State Drought Task Force's outdoor water use restrictions took effect. The town posted the state order alongside its own notice; residents should review the guidelines at wayland.ma.us before watering lawns or gardens this week.
Town offices will be closed Thursday, July 2, and Friday, July 3, in observance of Independence Day.

Tonight is a noteworthy night at the Wayland Museum & Historical Society, which is hosting a public reading of Frederick Douglass's "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?" The event runs 7–8:30 p.m. at 12 Cochituate Road and is free and open to all — a timely program on the eve of the Independence Day holiday weekend.
The Wayland Free Public Library is reminding patrons it will be closed July 3, 4, and 5 in observance of the holiday. The library is also serving as a cooling station this week during open hours. The library's 2026 Summer Reading Program, "Plant a Seed, Read," kicked off June 15 and is ongoing.
Vokes Players opens its summer production, "Over the River and Through the Woods" by Joe DiPietro, on July 24 at Beatrice Herford's Vokes Theatre, 97 Boston Post Road. The romantic comedy runs through August 8, with Susan Scannell Gilbert, Nolan Dupont Love, Doug Sanders, Bill Novakowski, Deanna Swan, and Allison Rollings in the cast.
