Lexington Sets Sept. 1 Start for New Waste Disposal Fees
LEXINGTON — Lexington residents will begin paying out of pocket to dispose of certain hard-to-recycle waste items starting Sept. 1, the town announced this week, citing state rules that no longer allow the items to go out as regular trash. The change comes as the town also continues to flag a moderate risk of West Nile virus locally after state health officials detected the mosquito-borne illness in neighboring communities.

Starting Sept. 1, 2026, Lexington residents will be responsible for the cost of disposing of certain waste items that are not accepted as ordinary trash, under the state's MassDEP Waste Disposal Bans. The town has posted details of the new special-collection fee program on its website ahead of the effective date.
Separately, the town is continuing to warn residents about elevated mosquito-borne illness risk after the Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced that West Nile virus has been detected in communities neighboring Lexington, raising the local risk level to moderate.
