Wakefield's Town Council, School Committee and Finance Committee warned the town may need an override or cuts as fiscal 2028 planning began. Finance Committee forecasting chair Dan Sherman projected a fiscal 2027 deficit near $4 million, growing to $5.5 million without a $1.5 million OPEB trust withdrawal, with free cash running out by 2030. Town Councilor Doug Butler said "either we are going to have to do some variety of override or cutting of service or cutting of people," a view Finance Committee member Brian Cusack echoed.
Superintendent Doug Lyons said the district already absorbed $1.1 million in unbudgeted out-of-district placement costs this year, entering FY28 roughly $1 million short. Town Administrator D. Casey cited new capital budget rules requiring cost estimates, with department deadlines of November 23 and December 11. New growth of 486 units at Head of the Lake and 58 units near Galvin is straining pre-K capacity, Lyons said.
