NEWTON — The Newton Zoning and Planning Committee leaned toward extending the city's demolition-delay period to 24 months but split over keeping a waiver that shortens it. Chair polled members informally: three favored retaining a waiver for full demolitions, four opposed, one abstained. Newton Historical Commission Chair Doug Cornelius argued the waiver gives the commission "a little bit more power" to shape replacement designs.
Councilor Jonathan Albright said she remained uncertain about "the costs of which we don't understand," while Councilor Emily Roach called the proposal "all stick and it's no carrot" without accompanying zoning incentives. Staff said about 14.71 percent of applications from June 2022 to December 2024 ultimately received a waiver. The committee also confirmed architect Robert Silver to the Auburndale Historic District Commission and deferred two Village Center Overlay District items to next month.
