Somerville trust approves minutes, hears $2.7M linkage update

Somerville Job Creation and Retention Trust reviews grim 2025 unemployment data, banks $2.7 million in linkage funds. MassHire Metro North's Penny Haselli and Kelly Washburn told trustees Somerville's unemployment rate hit 4.3 percent in May 2025 before settling at 3.6 percent by December, with Black and Hispanic residents statewide facing rates as high as 7.5 percent. Trustee Thomas Bent pushed back on the data's lack of construction-industry representation, prompting Washburn to explain that trade jobs are rarely posted online.

Staff liaison William Blackmer reported the Trust's linkage fund holds an uncommitted balance of about $2.7 million, with $500,000 still owed from one project. Haselli said "there is no longer that one perfect job" and flagged a regional shortage of driver's licenses among young job seekers as a persistent employer complaint. Trustees approved March 19 minutes 5-0 and adjourned at 7:46 p.m.
