Somerville Panel Votes to Merge Bicycle and Transit Advisory Committees

Other Committee · Meeting of July 8, 2026

Somerville's multi-body review panel votes to merge two mobility committees and dissolve the Ethics Commission. The Review of Multiple Member Bodies Committee, meeting remotely on July 8, voted 3-0 on both actions, with two members absent from each roll call. Chair Chris Dewan reversed his earlier position on the Bicycle Advisory Committee and Pedestrian and Transit Advisory Committee — despite a text from Director of Mobility Brad Rosson saying he was "very comfortable with our two committee model" — arguing that the committee's mandate to address advisory-body proliferation pointed toward creating a single Mobility Advisory Committee with bicycle and pedestrian-transit subcommittees.

On the Ethics Commission, Councilor Jesse Klingen said he "can't think of any good reason to keep this body in place," noting the panel appeared last to have met around 2015 and that state ethics enforcement is already available to residents. Staff Liaison Brendan Salisbury disclosed that the committee's project assistant is departing in coming weeks, and acknowledged that the originally planned presentation-by-presentation review of all 44-plus city bodies is "haphazard and ad hoc" by necessity — with the committee now relying on member nominations to set future agendas before a year-end reporting deadline.
