Human Rights Commission · Meeting of May 18, 2026
Watertown's Human Rights Commission unanimously adopted a student-designed logo and pre-approved $1,500 for Indigenous Peoples Day. The commission, working from about $2,944.87 remaining in its fiscal 2026 budget, also approved up to $500 for Pride swag and $300 for a banner ahead of the June 6 Watertown Pride Parade. Pigsgusset Initiative organizer Jennifer said this year's Indigenous Peoples Day, set for October 11 at Hosmer Elementary School, will feature James Beard Award-winning chef Sherry Pocknett working with Watertown High School culinary students.
Watertown Police Captain Unsworth told the commission the department "does not enforce civil detainers" and has not for eight to ten years, addressing commissioner concerns over media reports of local cooperation with ICE. The commission also unanimously approved a revised "Immigration Enforcement in Our Community" statement for its website and discussed changing procedures to issue rapid-response statements faster after a delay following a recent Rutland Street incident.
