Human Rights Commission · Meeting of June 16, 2026

WATERTOWN — The Watertown Human Rights Commission heard a father's appeal to investigate the school district's handling of his disabled daughter's case and allocated most of its remaining budget to Indigenous Peoples Day and outreach merchandise. Ryan Nicholson told commissioners his 11-year-old autistic daughter has missed most of the school year after the district forwarded his family's reintegration request to lawyers instead of responding, saying "we have to pay for our daughter's basic rights because the district refuses to work with us to provide them." The commission took no vote on his request but said it would use its existing complaint process. Separately, commissioners approved $1,500 for an Indigenous Peoples Day chef invoice, 7-1 with one abstention, and about $650 for stickers, t-shirts and a laminated poster, 8-0.

They also voted 7-1 to co-sponsor a July 15 panel on Indigenous history tied to Watertown's Treaty Day, after member Gabriel Camacho raised concerns about how Native history was being framed.
