CPC backs $990,000 for Walker Pond design
Watertown's Community Preservation Committee voted to recommend $990,000 for the next design phase of Walker Pond Park.
Community Preservation Committee · Meeting of May 21, 2026
Watertown's Community Preservation Committee voted to recommend $990,000 for the next design phase of Walker Pond Park. The money, drawn from open space and undesignated reserves, covers construction drawings, wetland permitting and additional engineering studies for a project estimated at $8 million to $10 million total. Open Space Coordinator Michelle Moon said the request equals 10 percent of the estimated budget, calling the site "a complex site" given its boardwalk and contamination issues.
Members worried aloud about the committee's financial exposure, with one noting the panel had already put in $150,000 and could be "boxed into" funding the entire project if grants don't materialize. The committee tied the funding to a requirement that staff report back on alternative funding sources and design progress by the end of 2026. The committee also unanimously approved the fiscal year 2027 CPA budget recommendation to City Council.
