Billerica Tables Flock Camera Audit Request
Select Board Meeting · Meeting of October 5, 2026
Billerica Select Board hears hours of debate on police surveillance cameras, takes no vote. Resident Lisa O'Connor Vitale asked the board to disable the town's nine Flock Safety license-plate cameras pending an independent audit, citing a hacked device that collected 1.6 million images of 50,000 vehicles in 21 days. Police Chief Frost said "nobody is being surveilled" and detailed cuts to database access, now limited to about 24 or 25 supervisors and detectives, and an end to nationwide and statewide data-sharing since 2025.
Seven residents spoke on the issue, split roughly down the middle. In other business, the board unanimously approved Piyan Corporation's pledge of its Easy Liquors license as collateral for a $200,000 loan, a National Grid/Verizon utility pole on Blackwood Avenue, and holiday festival permits expecting about 282 attendees at a November 20 fundraiser.
