Billerica's Select Board paused for a moment of silence Aug. 17 to honor two longtime local coaches who died, with no other new sports developments reported this week.

COMMUNITY -- The Select Board opened its Aug. 17 meeting with a moment of silence for four Billerica residents who died recently, two of whom were remembered specifically for coaching local youth. Otis Thorlander was described by the board as a longtime teacher who coached wrestling and football in town, called "a mentor to many, many of us that grew up here in town." Kevin Heffernan, a former Planning Board member who chaired the High School Building Committee, was also remembered as a coach; board members said he "left a mark on a lot of the youth here in Billerica" who, per the board, "are winning championships" and are "grateful to what he's done." The board thanked both men's families for their contributions to the community.
