Belmont Select Board Approves $2.5 Million in Contracts, Sets November Town Meeting

BELMONT — June 29, 2026 — Belmont Select Board approves $2.5 million in contracts and sets three-night fall Special Town Meeting. The board voted unanimously Monday to award a $457,542 facade restoration contract at Daniel Butler Elementary School to MJS Construction of Middleton, renew a $1,528,820 cleaning services contract with Compass Facilities Services of Georgetown, and approve a $504,450 sidewalk repair contract with N. Sacca and Sons of Arlington — the annual contract that DPW Director Jay Marcotte said addresses a backlog he estimates at between $29 million and $40.8 million for concrete sidewalks alone. "We are woefully underfunded compared to other communities," Marcotte told the board, noting the town's annual sidewalk budget of $525,065 is roughly half the second-lowest in a comparison group of 16 to 18 municipalities. The board called unanimously for a fall Special Town Meeting on November 16, 17, and 18, 2026, with a preliminary list of roughly 19 potential articles including the Hills Crossing overlay district, a tree bylaw amendment, and a stormwater enterprise fund. Vice Chair Taylor Yates was designated by unanimous vote as the Select Board's official negotiator with property owners in the Hills Crossing overlay district, with Planning Director Chris Ryan signaling a September 8 go or no-go decision on whether the overlay zoning will be ready for November town meeting. Chair Matt Taylor announced after executive session that Fire Chief DiStefano will depart September 6 after approximately five years of service.
