Westford Board of Health approves irrigation well for quarry with perchlorate safeguards. The board voted unanimously Monday to allow Century Aggregates to install a non-potable irrigation well at its quarry at 49 North Main Street, conditioned on initial perchlorate testing below two parts per billion, annual testing with results submitted to the health department, an initial sump water test, and restriction of use to dust suppression equipment in the crushing area only. Company representative Zachary Clemente said the well would supply low-volume nozzles at five to 10 gallons per minute and that drainage stays on site, draining to a sump roughly 85 feet below grade; he acknowledged the site's perchlorate history but said the property had last tested negative in 2011.
The board also heard from Michael Hugo of the Massachusetts Association of Health Boards and Mike Brunski, chair of the town's Clean Energy and Sustainability Committee, on a new draft battery energy storage system health regulation, with the Planning Board's first BESS public hearing set for July 27.
