West Nile Virus Detected in Towns Near Lexington
LEXINGTON — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health confirmed Friday that West Nile virus has turned up in several communities bordering Lexington, and town officials are urging residents to take precautions as the summer mosquito season stretches into September.
TOWN HALL The state health department announced Aug. 21 that West Nile virus has been detected in neighboring communities, according to a Lexington town alert. Town officials pointed residents to the state's mosquito-borne illness guidance and recommended the usual precautions: draining standing water around the house, wearing repellent outdoors, and covering up during peak mosquito hours at dawn and dusk. The virus is typically most active through early fall in Massachusetts.
Residents looking to trim their electric bills can still book a free 20-minute session with Yahan Hua, Lexington's Energy Advocate, a service the town rolled out this month.
