Wayland School Committee Cuts Music Fees, Adopts District Goals, and Approves Protect Act Policy

Wayland School Committee unanimously cut instrumental music fees at Loker Elementary and adopted new district goals at its September 9 meeting. The committee voted to reduce the annual music registration fee for fourth and fifth grade Loker students from $150 to $90, proportional to a scheduling pilot that trimmed weekly lesson time from 75 to 45 minutes, and authorized the Director of Finance and Operations Kirsten Patterson or her designee to contact families with the option of a refund or a donation of the overpayment to the music program. Three residents appeared during public comment to oppose the pilot, with Penny Wayne Shapiro, founder of the Wayland School of Music and a former first violinist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, warning that reducing private instruction time is "not the same" as adding ensemble time and that students "fall behind, decide they're no good, and quit." The committee also approved the district's 2026-27 goals and improvement plan, which include a color-coded tracking system and new measurement language, and voted unanimously to adopt a Protect Act policy governing staff interactions with civil law enforcement, directing that principal cell phone numbers be redacted from the public-facing version.
