Somerville School Building Committee Advances Geothermal, Mass Timber, and Certification Plans

Somerville's new school building committee reviewed geothermal, mass timber, and LEED Platinum targets at its June 8 virtual meeting. The committee voted 9-0 to approve May 4 minutes and heard Perkins Eastman and mechanical engineer CMTA outline three heating and cooling options for the planned school at 115 Sycamore Street: a full ground-source geothermal heat pump system, an air-source heat pump system, and a hybrid of the two, with onsite solar estimated to cover roughly 20 percent of annual energy demand. Sustainable design consultant Colleen Soden reported the project is registered under LEED version 4 and tracking approximately 67 points, with Platinum described as the goal; the firm has worked on four of the five LEED Platinum schools in Massachusetts.

The MSBA reimburses construction costs up to $586 per square foot, well below the project's current estimate in the high $800-to-$900-per-square-foot range, meaning premium system costs fall primarily to the city. Project staff told the committee an MSBA-required grade reconfiguration certification documenting the planned Brown School and Winter Hill merger will be drafted for review at the July 6 meeting, ahead of an August 6 PSR submission deadline.
