Somerville Fair Housing Commission Tables Minutes, Reviews Two New Family-Status Complaints

Other Committee · Meeting of April 23, 2026

Somerville Fair Housing Commission reviews two noise complaints involving families with children and debriefs successful April outreach events. At the April 23 remote meeting, staff member Shannon described two new cases, both citing family status as a protected class, in which property managers appeared to respond more readily to neighbors' noise complaints than to those from households with young children; Shannon said she was attempting to reach one property manager by phone after emails went unanswered. Commission consultant Gloria shared evaluation data showing 14 of 17 participants at an April Council on Aging landlord education event submitted positive feedback forms and called for more in-depth future programming.

A second April event at the Central Somerville Library, screening "Segregated by Design" and discussing "The Color of Law," drew representatives from CAS, the Somerville Preservation Committee, Somerville YIMBY, and Tufts University, with commissioners crediting newsletter outreach through partner organizations for the increased turnout. Shannon reported a mayoral candidate for the commission's open non-income-restricted seat had been forwarded to the City Council for approval, while interviews for a second, income-restricted seat are expected to begin in May through a new HR-run process, with four applicants on file.
