GROTON — The Groton Sewer Commission voted to abate $880.94 from the Groton Historical Society's bill after a defective meter part inflated charges. Business Manager Lauren Curry told commissioners the society's April 1 bill showed 87 units of sewer use, far above its usual 10 units, generating a $2,418 total water and sewer charge. The society's Michelle Collette said a tenant's late-night showers initially looked suspicious on monitoring software but were "well within the normal range" once the meter was corrected.
Commissioners, including Chair Jim Gemeiner, Clerk Darius Budris and Vice Chair Eric Berg, agreed to let the society pay the adjusted bill over up to a year. A second resident's request over 66 units of excess usage, blamed on a leaky spigot, was held pending further data; staff calculated the overage at roughly 548 gallons a day, which members called implausible for a simple leak.
