BOXBOROUGH — The Boxborough Fire Station Building Committee voted to approve embodied-carbon design measures and rejected three other sustainability options for the new station. On a 6-0 roll call, the committee backed tracking low-carbon materials without full documentation requirements, then voted 6-0 against graywater reuse, HVAC occupancy grouping and triple-pane glazing, the latter partly because triple glazing was found to interfere with the building's radio systems. The project's schematic design cost estimate stands at approximately $28.3 million, and residents pressed the committee on the cost of a 50-foot training tower that is not yet separately priced.
Fire Chief said renting time at a regional training academy instead would cost the town $177,659 to $223,142 annually, telling the committee, "I don't want to train. I need to train." The committee's site plan application to the Planning Board is due October 19, with hearings beginning November 18.
