New high school field house design settles on a scaled-down practice track as fall youth sports schedules take shape.

HIGH SCHOOL -- The Lexington School Building Committee reviewed updated field house plans Sept. 1 for the new high school project. The design has shifted from an oval track layout to one modeled on the existing "D-shaped" track, with the straightaway moved to the center of the space and basketball and volleyball/pickleball courts flanking it. The plan includes a four-lane track, a long jump pit along one edge, and a protected throwing area enclosed by netting, according to project team members. The field house will be a practice-only facility, without bleachers. Committee members were also told the district's overall construction timeline, and the field house's availability, remains tied to a pending state Department of Environmental Protection appeal over wetlands permitting for the broader building project.

YOUTH LEAGUES -- Lexington Little League's fall softball season is taking shape, with the Lexington Liberty 12U and 10U travel teams slated to open play Sept. 13, hosting Waltham Perciak and Cambridge respectively, per the league's posted schedule. A Minors Fall Baseball Clinic practice is also scheduled that day at the Fiske Street field.

TOWN -- The Recreation & Community Programs Department's calendar lists two upcoming events: a Harvest Festival on Oct. 3 and a Haunted House on Oct. 23, according to the department's website.
