Municipal Sports Complex rink remains closed after recurring dehumidification failures, Select Board told.

TOWN -- The town's Municipal Sports Complex rink stayed closed through the week after ongoing problems with the facility's dehumidification system, the Select Board learned at its July 20 meeting. Facilities staff said the dehumidifier has been causing water droplets to fall from girders above the ice and freeze into small ice formations, creating unsafe skating conditions. Officials said the closures have cost the town an estimated $22,000 in lost rental income, and the town is looking into recouping those costs through insurance or town counsel. A representative from Novel Air, maker of the dehumidification unit, was scheduled to inspect the system on Tuesday, July 21, along with representatives from general contractor Skanska and the building-controls vendor. Building Committee Chair Mark Haley and Vice Chair Dante Rondioli told the board the committee met July 17 to review the issue and that a temporary trailer-mounted dehumidifier is being arranged as a backup should the system fail again. Officials said the root cause had not yet been identified as of the meeting.

YOUTH LEAGUES -- The Belmont Youth Soccer Camp continued its run of weekly sessions this period, held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Harris Field at Belmont High School. The camp, which runs July 14 through Aug. 13, is led by Belmont High School varsity and JV soccer players and is open to players entering grades 3-8. Organizers said all proceeds go toward supporting the Belmont Soccer Program, with the full 10-session program priced at $200 or $20 per single session.
