Melrose Health Officials Warn Residents After West Nile Virus Detected

MELROSE — Health officials are urging Melrose residents to take precautions after mosquito samples collected in the city this week tested positive for West Nile virus, the city's Health and Human Services Department announced Thursday.

TOWN HALL

The Melrose Health and Human Services Department reported Thursday that mosquito samples collected in Melrose this week came back positive for West Nile virus. Officials are advising residents to protect themselves against mosquito bites, particularly during dawn and dusk hours when the insects are most active, and to eliminate standing water around homes where mosquitoes breed. West Nile virus is most commonly spread through mosquito bites and can cause flu-like symptoms in people who become infected, with older adults facing the highest risk of severe illness.
