MBTA to Suspend Red Line at All Cambridge Stations July 21-30

CAMBRIDGE — The MBTA will suspend Red Line service at every Cambridge station for 10 days starting July 21, forcing riders onto shuttle buses, as the city also learned this week that it has been elevated to the state's most severe drought designation.

Red Line trains will not run between Alewife and Park Street from July 21 through July 30, with free, accessible shuttle buses replacing service and making all stops along the route, according to the MBTA. Riders at every Cambridge station — Alewife, Porter, Harvard, Central and Kendall/MIT — should expect the shutdown to affect their commute for the full 10-day stretch.

The Commonwealth also elevated Cambridge and the broader Northeast region to Level 3 – Critical Drought status, up from Level 2 – Significant Drought the week before, according to the city.

Separately, acting on recommendations from the City Manager's Office, the License Commission has authorized the seasonal sale of alcohol-to-go for permitted businesses within designated open-container and public-consumption districts, along with a maximum one-hour extension of alcohol sales for approved bars and restaurants, a move aimed at supporting local businesses through the summer season.

The Valente Branch library is now open Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. through July and August; the Main Library remains closed on Sundays until September. Free outdoor concerts by local musicians continue Tuesday evenings at Danehy Park, a series that began July 1.

Library Director Maria McCauley used her weekly message to highlight the library's summer lineup, pointing residents toward a full slate of programs running through the Central Square, Main, O'Connell and Valente branches, from ESOL classes to hands-on workshops at the Hive Makerspace.
